Grazyna A. Materna, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Vice President and Chief Design Engineer
gmaterna@jgcooke.com

She worked with the Provincial Hospital in Poland as a Construction Inspector from 1981 to 1984. For a period of three years thereafter, she worked with the Provincial Project Office as a Design Engineer. In 1988 she joined the Ottawa office of Stein, Hamilton & Leibe Associates. In 1990 she joined Anrep Associates Limited as an Intermediate Level Project Engineer, responsible for the design and construction review of new buildings and surveys of existing buildings.

For an extended period during 1992, Grazyna was associated with Douglas J. Cardinal Architect in the engineering design and project management of a number of institutional buildings for Cree First Nation in Ouje-Bougoumou Village, Quebec. The structural engineering for these projects was subsequently taken over by John G. Cooke & Associates Ltd.

In September 1992, she became Partner and Vice President of the newly incorporated company John G. Cooke & Associates Ltd. As vice president, she manages technical staff and provides training and guidance to the engineers. As Chief Project Engineer, she is responsible for project management, client liaison, design (specializing in seismic design), specification writing and construction review.

Ms Materna has worked on a number of concurrent projects that required simultaneous management and design activities within tight time frames to meet critical deadlines, including a $30 million renovation to St. Laurent Centre between 1996 and 2000.

Grazyna endeavors to balance the many related aspects of professional practice; excellence in structural design, strong emphasis on technical and project management skills, and current knowledge of financial techniques.

Grazyna is currently involved with several on-going projects, including Renovation and seismic upgrade of the West Block at Parliament Hill, Retro-fit of the Bank of Montreal on Wellington, and several projects within the Government Conference Centre. She is also the structural engineer to the contractor working at the Congress Centre, where she is involved with the design of temporary structures during construction.
