Port Burwell Lighthouse

A structural evaluation was undertaken as part of a proposed exterior restoration project at the historic Port Burwell Lighthouse, in Port Burwell, Ontario. Investigation revealed significant deterioration of the primary vertical wood members, particularly where they were embedded in the foundation, resulting in severe loss of structural capacity. Analysis indicated that the structure lacked sufficient resistance to wind loads, creating a potential safety concern for the surrounding area.

To address the immediate risk, a temporary restraint system was designed to stabilize the lighthouse in the event of structural failure. The solution incorporated a steel collar and anchored cables connected to ground supports around the perimeter, providing stability while allowing flexibility for future foundation repair and restoration work.
